Bear Creek along Bear Creek Trail

Bear Creek Trail

Bear Creek Falls (on a separate post) is underneath the bridge along Highway 550 (Million Dollar Highway) and makes a good roadside view of this waterfall. It's located about 2 1/2 miles south of Ouray.

I hiked up the nearby Bear Creek Trail. The trailhead runs over the tunnel just before you get to the falls. I would strongly recommend that you be in good shape for hiking this 100-year-old trail as the first 1-2 miles has a steep ascent (1,000 vertical feet plus). In about 1 1/2 to 2 miles into the trail is a horsetail waterfall in a chasm (photo attached) before reaching Grizzly Bear Mine (2 1/2 miles). There's a few more falls on the way to Yellow Jacket mine (5 miles) which aren't as tall but are beautiful.

Bear Creek Trail

Hi Tom,

Thank you for this wonderful photo of the waterfall along the Bear Creek Trail, and the information about it, including the information about Bear Creek Falls :-). About the waterfall on this page, it looks like you had to stand on the edge of the cliff to get the photo...yikes!

Anyway, thanks again for contributing this new waterfall since it's no where else on this site...I do appreciate it :-).
