Conejos Falls

by James Gardner
(Wagoner, OK)

This is a fall that is on the Middle Fork of Conejos River. It is easy to get to after a hike of 4.4 miles from the trailhead. The falls are located in the South San Juan Wilderness. South of Platoro Colorado. Which is South West of Alamosa.

There is some great places to camp in this area.

Karen's reply:
Thank you so much James, for this great picture of Conejos Falls, and the related information you provided; very helpful :-).

We made the long drive to Platoro several years ago, and stayed the night there, with plans to hike to the falls the next morning. But unfortunately it didn't work out, so we're hoping to make it there another time.

To anyone who might want to see this falls, but doesn't want to hike the distance to see it, another great way to get there is by horse-back. There is a horse outfitter in the area that, (among other things), will take you to Conejos Falls. We might even take that route! Anyway, the name of the outfitter is: Conejos Canyon Outfitters. I don't know anything about them though, so if you try them out, let us know on this page, what you thought of them, and how your ride to the falls was...

Thank you Grant, for sharing your memories of Conejos Falls, and the surrounding area. That is so interesting :-). And if you do call the outfitter and go back to see the falls, (and the fish), again, I'd love to hear all about it. Anyway, thanks again for sharing these wonderful memories :-).

My grandfather ran a sheep grazing lease from the gov. for many years at this location. He ran about 1000 head. As a young boy of 10 to 16 I would stay with him & the Mexican herder as we brought sheep up here from Sanford Colo. I would fish the falls, Three forks, Blue Lake & Red Lake for large browns & rainbows using grass hoppers & worms brought up from the valley. We often camped at nite at the falls & watched a herd of elk feed on side of the mtn. across the river from us. It was a great & beautiful time. May call that outfitter & go see it again & see if those fish are still there. I would scare off bears at nite with the 30/30. So much fun. Thanks.
